Fall Weekend

What did you do over fall break? The autumn season is now in full swing, and hopefully some of you had a chance to take advantage of all the season has to offer. In the 1960s, students at Western New England celebrated the season with Harvester’s Weekend, a popular multiday event filled with pumpkins, hayrides, and masquerade balls. The weekend celebrations even saw the crowning of a Pumpkin Queen.

It appears as though the full Harvester’s Weekend was a short-lived tradition, only appearing in the newspapers from 1965-1969, however, harvest dances were a common event on campus as early as 1941. These dances, sometimes referred to as Harvest Hops, were a popular way of welcoming new freshmen to campus.

Below are pictures from the 1969 Harvester’s Festival, as well as a newspaper article from The Westerner detailing the event in 1965. Perhaps they will inspire some fun fall activities to enjoy before the snow begins falling!
